Are humans free or determined? Baruch Spinoza is one of the great theorists of determinism, the theory arguing that our choices are not a matter of a free will. For this thinker, the illusion of our freedom comes from the fact that we are aware of our desires, but ignorant of the multiple causes that determine them. Our choices would therefore be the result of multiple causes acting on us (social, cultural, environmental, biological, neurological, chemical, etc.). However, Spinoza's determinism should not lead to nihilism since we should seek to live according to our "conatus". By living in accordance with what preserves us in our being, Spinoza believes that human beings increase their power to act and their joy.
